After noticing how his Corgi, Maxine, made subway riders smile during their commutes when she would ride around in his backpack with him, New York City resident Bryan Reisberg started sharing short videos of the encounters on social media. The clips quickly went viral, earning millions of views and turning Maxine into a bit of an Internet celebrity.
That attention led Reisberg to a bigger idea. He launched a dog backpack company, Little Chonk, and partnered with Best Friends Animal Society to help shelter dogs find homes. Every week, he carries a different shelter dog through the city in a backpack marked “Adopt Me,” filming videos that highlight each dog’s personality.
So far, 11 dogs have been featured, and all of them found homes except for one who’s facing medical challenges. Best Friends chief executive Julie Castle says the videos have racked up more than 75-million views and raised spirits among staff. She also shares that the shelter has seen about one hundred more adoptions than at the same point last year.
