Harrisonburg’s downtown community gathered in November to recognize standout achievements from across the city during the Harrisonburg Downtown Renaissance’s annual celebration of 2025. Among the honorees was the Harrisonburg Farmers Market, which received Destination of the Year for its continued impact on local culture and commerce.
To mark the honor, the market hosted a festive Christmas Market on the first three Saturdays of December, transforming the space into a seasonal hub for shoppers, artisans, and neighbors alike.
Market manager Halee Jones said the recognition reflects the market’s mission to foster belonging and connection. She emphasized that the farmers market is designed to be a welcoming environment where everyone can feel at home.
The award also highlights the market’s consistent efforts to support local entrepreneurs. Jones noted that each week brings together farmers, artists, and makers who have taken meaningful risks to build small businesses rooted in passion and creativity.
One of those vendors, Trisha Brown Leweke, said she decided to join the Harrisonburg Farmers Market after selling at other markets across the Valley. At her booth, she offers freshly brewed teas, giving visitors a warm drink as they browse on cold winter days.
Leweke said that whether someone attends as a shopper or a vendor, the sense of community remains constant. She described the market as an essential gathering place—one that supports the city’s growth while offering visitors a place to feel welcomed and connected.
Looking ahead, Jones said an expanded lineup of artisan vendors and the release of the 2026 market calendar signal continued growth. She said her favorite part of the market is watching people come together each week to support local businesses, participate in creative activities, and build lasting connections.
