Gen Z Couples Fight More About Money -- Why?

Is it true that couples who are members of Generation Z are the most likely to argue about money?

That's what a new poll from Starling Bank claims, that 91-percent of Gen Z couples have argued about their use of money, contrasted with just 76-percent of those from all other age groups.

There are several reasons for this, according to financial expert Steve Cotton, including the inexcusable lack of financial education given to students in America.

"We do not do a good job as a state or as a country, of teaching financial literacy in our high schools or even in our colleges," he says.

But perhaps even more importantly are the learned attitudes that younger people, especially Gen Z, glean from our society.

"They've been raised in a selfish and narcissistic culture and so a lot of younger consumers look at their own needs and wants as primary and other people's needs and wants as secondary."

And probably the most obvious answer is still among the truest answers, Mr. Cotton says, "I think its just an issue with youth and inexperience, limited life experience, I think that has more to do with it than anything else."

So if you look at the results of the poll, the 15-percentage-point gap between Gen Z and other generations on this most important subject between married couples, it looks like Gen Z isn't really all that different from other generations, they're just younger!

"There are a lot of benefits to youth and inexperience, but handling money well and finding common ground is not always one of them," he says.
