Miami, FL - Miami Beach officials have increased police presence around synagogues, schools, and other community sites following a mass shooting at a Hanukkah celebration in Sydney, Australia that authorities are treating as an alleged antisemitic attack.

The incident occurred during a large public gathering at Bondi Beach known as Chanukah by the Sea, where hundreds of people had assembled for the first night of the Jewish holiday.

Australian authorities reported that two suspects allegedly opened fire on attendees, resulting in multiple fatalities and dozens of injuries.

Police confirmed that one of the gunmen was killed at the scene during the response, while the second suspect was taken into custody in critical condition.

Officials classified the event as a terrorist attack based on early findings and indicated that the Jewish community was targeted during a religious celebration.

Following the news, Miami Beach Police stated that although there are no known threats locally, officers are increasing visibility as a precautionary measure.

Cooper City officials also issued a statement expressing support for the victims and announcing additional coordination with law enforcement to ensure safety during local Hanukkah events.

A communitywide Menorah lighting is scheduled to take place at the Suellen H. Fardelmann Sports Complex.

Miami Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava released a statement expressing sorrow for the victims and reaffirming that county agencies are working to support enhanced security at Jewish community centers and places of worship.

She noted that the attack occurred during a moment meant for prayer and gathering, prompting heightened attention to safety during the holiday period.
