2 Killed In Brown University Shooting

The search is on for a gunman after reports of an active shooter on the campus of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.

So far, two people are confirmed dead and eight others are in critical but stable condition at Rhode Island Hospital, according to Providence Mayor Brett Smiley.

Police do not have a shooter or any suspect in custody yet, but the effort is now "all hands on deck" to find a suspect, the mayor said at a news conference Saturday afternoon.

It's also unknown whether there might be more than one person involved in this incident.

"The call came in at 4:05 [Eastern Standard Time] to Brown University with the report of an active shooter" the mayor said, "I can confirm that two individuals have died, and there are another eight in critical status, though stable."

"Those are the only casualties that we know at this time, but it's important to remember and I have to remind people that these numbers may change."

"Additionally, we do not have a shooter in custody at this time. There is a shelter-in-place in effect for the greater Brown University area," the mayor added.

The Governor of Rhode Island, Dan McKee, calls the events "unthinkable," adding that he's mobilized all personnel, "whether it's the state police, or other agencies, but our office has been in touch with the White House, so we're bringing all resources to the table, and our hearts go out to anyone who has been impacted by this in any way."
