New York City Comptroller Brad Lander has announced his candidacy for New York's Tenth Congressional District, currently held by Congressman Dan Goldman. Lander, a Democrat, made the announcement on Wednesday, highlighting his commitment to progressive values and his desire to bring change to Washington.
Lander, who has served as city comptroller, is known for his progressive stance and activism. He has received an endorsement from New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, who praised Lander's "unwavering principles" and dedication to serving those in need. Lander's campaign launch video criticized Goldman for his ties to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) and emphasized the need for grassroots solutions rather than high-dollar fundraisers.
Lander's entry into the race is expected to intensify the primary challenge in one of New York City's most left-leaning districts. The race will test the strength of the city's progressive movement, which recently helped Mamdani secure a mayoral victory. Lander has also secured endorsements from prominent figures like Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, and the Working Families Party.
Goldman, who has not yet focused on his re-election campaign, is noted for his moderate stance and focus on issues such as immigration and opposition to the Trump administration. The upcoming election is anticipated to be a significant contest between the progressive and moderate wings of the Democratic Party in New York.
