Springfield officials say anyone going out on the ice right now is "flirting with disaster."
Fire Commissioner BJ Calvi said ice isn't safe for activities until it's at least four inches thick, which will likely take about two more weeks.
For a UTV, the ice must be at least five inches thick to be safe.
Commissioner Calvi said anyone who decides to go out on the ice too early isn't just endangering themselves, but also the crews performing the rescue operation.
