Playwright and Emily in Paris actor and Jeremy O. Harris was released from a Japanese jail this week after being detained for three weeks.
Harris, 36, was freed from custody Monday (December 8) after being arrested for suspicion of smuggling the psychedelic drug ecstasy on November 16, the Tomishiro Police Department confirmed to the Associated Press on Wednesday (December 10). The playwright was allegedly found to have 0.78 grams (0.0275 ounces) of MDMA in a container inside a tote bag he was carrying while traveling through Naha Airport at the time of his arrest.
The Naha District Public Prosecutors Office didn't confirm whether Harris' case had been dropped or was still pending investigation. The playwright traveled from Britain to Okinawa with a layover in Taiwan and planned to sightsee prior to his arrest.
Harris played Grégory Elliot Duprée in five episodes of the popular Netflix series Emily In Paris, as well as smaller roles in the Gossip Girl reboot and What We Do in the Shadows. The 36-year-old is best known for writing the Broadway hit Slave Play, which received a record 12 Tony nominations and lost them all.
Harris was also credited for co-writing the Zola screenplay and co-producing the HBO series Euphoria. Harris also has a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Yale School of Drama.
