FLORIDA - Florida drivers are being advised to review their vehicles after a law took effect on October 1, 2025, that prohibits any coverings, coatings, frames or accessories that allegedly obstruct a license plate.

The updated statute requires plates to remain fully visible as issued by the state, with no added elements that could interfere with identification by law enforcement or toll systems.

Police departments across the state have begun informing drivers that decorative or protective plate frames, including clear covers, tinted shields and novelty borders, are no longer permitted.

Officers from Sarasota Police explained that plates must remain plain and unaltered.

Ryan Gorman and Dana McKay cover this story and more on The Ryan Gorman Show:

They noted that drivers should not spray, coat or attach stickers to their tags under the new rules.

The law classifies any obstruction as a second degree misdemeanor, carrying a potential fine of up to $500 and possible jail time.

North Port Police stated the intention is to ensure plates remain readable in all lighting and weather conditions.

They encouraged drivers to remove any covers to avoid citations.

Many motorists were unaware of the change until approached by officers or reporters.

Some said they had used the same plate frames for several years without issue.

Others viewed the accessories as a way to personalize their vehicles or help locate them in crowded parking areas.

The Florida Highway Patrol confirmed it will enforce the law when violations are observed but plans to focus on public education during the initial adjustment period.

Officials advised drivers to remove any non compliant items to ensure their plates meet current state requirements.
