Authorities are investigating a significant fire that erupted Thursday (December 4) on Western Avenue in Albany. The blaze, which began at 241 Western Avenue and spread to 239 Western Avenue, left four adults seriously injured and displaced 13 residents, including University at Albany students.

Albany Fire Chief Joseph Gregory described the scene as a "wall of fire up the front of the building." Firefighters rescued four individuals, with one escaping independently, another assisted down a ladder, and two found inside the building. Two of the victims remain in critical condition at Albany Medical Center. A dog was also rescued and resuscitated.

The fire caused extensive damage to both buildings, particularly to the cocklofts. Crews faced additional challenges due to cold and windy weather conditions. Fortunately, no firefighters were injured during the operation.

The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents, providing shelter and resources. University at Albany officials confirmed that affected students are receiving support on campus.

Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan urged residents to exercise caution with home heating as the investigation into the fire's cause continues.
