GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Grand Rapids Police say the body of James Barcus has been found.
The 78-year-old had walked out of the Kent County Home for Veterans in Grand Rapids last night. Search teams from the Michigan National Guard had been looking for Barcus. He was a Navy veteran. Police say an off-duty Grand Rapids firefighter located the body on the west side of the Grand River near North Park Street.
Due to the location, the Walker Police Department responded and will be conducting the follow-up investigation.
Earlier, police had said Marcus may have been experiencing issues with memory loss or dementia.
“We are appreciative of the Michigan National Guard and the volunteers who assisted GRPD and GRFD with this search. We extend our deepest condolences to Mr. Barcus’ family and loved ones,” said GRPD Chief Eric Winstrom.
