The United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, went into lockdown on Thursday (September 11) following reports of a shooting incident. Initial reports suggested that shots were fired on the campus, causing alarm among students and staff. However, authorities later clarified that there was no credible threat to the academy.
According to WBAL, the incident began when a former midshipman, who had been expelled, made anonymous threats via social media. This led to a lockdown as a precautionary measure. During the lockdown, a midshipman mistook a law enforcement officer for a threat and struck him with a training weapon. In response, the officer shot the midshipman, who was then transported to a hospital and is expected to recover.
The Naval Academy's Public Affairs Office confirmed that the lockdown was a response to threats and that they were working closely with local law enforcement.
Aerial footage showed a medevac helicopter landing on campus to transport the injured midshipman. The lockdown was lifted after authorities determined there was no ongoing threat.
This incident comes amid a series of threats reported at various college campuses across the United States, including several Historically Black Colleges and Universities. As the situation develops, updates will be provided by the Naval Academy and local authorities.
