What First Measles Case in San Diego Means for Parents

The first measles case in San Diego County this year that was reported Friday is the 20th case of the disease in California. A teenager who had travelled overseas.

In 2024, there were four confirmed cases of measles in San Diego County and all were associated with international travel.

Nationwide, as of late last week there 1,359 cases of measles.

Those numbers may not sound like a big deal…but the CDC says the United States has already surpassed a milestone in reported measles cases in 2025...having had the most cases since the disease was declared eliminated in the U.S. in 2000 and the most cases in more than three decades.

San Diego’s public health officer issued a statement saying that “Measles is a very contagious disease that can be spread easily by coughing, sneezing or being in the same room with an infected person and that there is no treatment for measles, just bed rest, fluids and controlling the fever.”

She says the best way to prevent measles is by getting the measles vaccine, something that has been standard practice for decades for kids…that was what led to the eradication of measles in the U.S.25 years ago.

Something for parents to think about with hundreds of thousands of kids now back in school.
