A police pursuit involving a stolen car led to a serious crash early Thursday (July 3) on Syracuse's southside, sending multiple people to the hospital. The Onondaga County Sheriff's Office reported that the incident began just after 1 a.m. when Syracuse Police spotted a stolen vehicle, prompting a pursuit with sheriff's deputies. The chase lasted about a minute before the stolen car crashed at the intersection of Kenmore and Richardson Avenues, near McKinley Park.
The stolen vehicle collided with another car not involved in the pursuit, pushing it into a utility pole, which subsequently toppled over. Inside the impacted vehicle were three individuals, including a toddler and a pregnant woman, all of whom were taken to the hospital for treatment.
The incident underscores ongoing concerns about vehicle thefts in Syracuse. In a related event earlier this year, a 14-year-old boy led deputies on a chase in a stolen Kia, resulting in a crash that injured his passenger. The boy was charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and fleeing an officer.
The Syracuse Police Department has been actively addressing such incidents, with recent pursuits highlighting the dangers involved. The community remains on alert as law enforcement continues efforts to curb vehicle thefts and ensure public safety.
