The Town of Hunter has issued a warning to residents about the presence of black bears in the area. Town Supervisor Sean Mahoney emphasized the importance of treating these animals as neighbors and taking precautions to avoid attracting them.

According to the New York State Department of Conservation, approximately 35 percent of New York's black bear population resides in the Catskill region. Residents are advised to secure their garbage, bring trash cans indoors, and avoid approaching or feeding bears. Mahoney also reminded the community that it is illegal to hunt or harm a bear without a valid hunting license or proper bear tags.

The town's warning aims to ensure the safety of both residents and bears by promoting coexistence and responsible behavior. As the summer season progresses, it is crucial for the community to remain vigilant and adhere to these guidelines to prevent any potential conflicts with the local bear population.
