Update 7 pm: Bush Intercontinental Seeing Weather-Related Flight Delays

Planes in and out of George Bush Intercontinental Airport have been seeing delays for most of Fathers' Day, and those delays got worse as the evening progressed.

There was a "ground stop" ordered in the 3 pm hour because of thunderstorms in the Houston area that kept planes from leaving the airport -- and very few planes were landing, either.

A "ground stop" is a term used by the Federal Aviation Administration, meaning all flights of a certain kind are barred from departure from a certain airport -- for example, all passenger planes carrying 80 or more passengers are stopped on the ground until the "ground stop" is lifted.

Sunday evening, a second ground stop of the day was ordered, this time again because of weather but also because of ground stops at other airports -- planes were significantly delayed in leaving for Denver or Atlanta airports because they, too, were subject to ground stops.

Flight delays are averaging more than 3 hours for planes arriving at Bush Intercontinental.

The Houston Airport System warns travelers to check with their airlines before leaving home to go to the airport as Bush Intercontinental is getting crowded because of all the travelers who've been stuck at the terminals for hours in some cases.
