Why Is Saudi Araba Allowing Alcohol Consumption For The 1st Time?

In 1952 Saudi Araba outlawed sales and consumption of any alcohol in their country. That law will be put on pause beginning in 2026 for 600 locations. These are sporting venues, five-star hotels, high-end resorts, diplomatic zones, and tourism developments such as Neom, Sindalah Island, and the Red Sea Project.

This is in preparation for 2030 when they'll host World Expo 2030 and the FIFA World Cup in 2034. Those 600 venues will be allowed to sell beer, wine, and cider; however, beverages with more than 20% alcohol content is still banned. If any of their customers are found to be publicly drunk the government says there will be harsh penalties imposed.

The Saudi's will continue to prosecute anyone who is found to have alcohol in their home
