Kelly Hansen opens up about leaving Foreigner

Kelly Hansen, Foreigner’s lead vocalist, has announced his decision to step down from the group after nearly two decades. In a heartfelt moment during the band’s performance on The Voice Tuesday night, Hansen shared that he first spoke with Foreigner’s founder and guitarist Mick Jones back in 2022 about the possibility of leaving. The reason? The grueling demands of life on the road. “I’m thankful and grateful for the opportunity to be the lead singer of this unbelievable band,” Hansen said, “but the traveling is really rough… year after year after year.”

Hansen emphasized that while the decision wasn’t easy, it was necessary for his well-being. “Mick was very supportive. He didn’t want me to go, of course, but he ultimately understood,” Hansen explained. “I know I’m affecting a lot of people, but ultimately I have to make a decision that is best for me.” His candid remarks reflect the toll that constant touring can take, even for seasoned performers. Despite stepping away, Hansen will honor his commitment to fans by completing Foreigner’s summer tour, which kicks off June 11th in Highland, California.

Looking ahead, guitarist Luis Maldonado is set to take over vocal duties after Hansen’s final show, which is expected to be in October.
