Memorial services for Van Robinson, former Syracuse Common Council president, are scheduled for Monday (May 12) at Bethany Baptist Church in Syracuse. The wake will be held from 10 a.m. to noon, followed by a funeral service. Robinson, who passed away at the age of 87, will be buried privately at Onondaga County Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

Robinson was a prominent figure in Syracuse, serving as the first African American president of the Common Council for 18 years, including eight years as council president. He was also a leader in the local chapter of the NAACP for 12 years, where he worked to increase minority voter registration and advocated for diversity in city schools and public safety departments. Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh praised Robinson's contributions, noting his influence in the decision to dismantle the Interstate 81 viaduct.

Robinson's dedication to the community earned him respect and admiration from many, including Onondaga County Controller Marty Masterpole and Legislator Charles E. Garland, who both expressed their condolences and highlighted Robinson's role as a mentor and advocate for justice. The Council Chambers in Syracuse are named in his honor, reflecting his lasting impact on the city.
