Bob Seger hits a milestone today as the rock ‘n roll icon celebrates his 80th birthday. Born in Detroit on May 6th, 1945, Seger broke onto the national scene in 1968 with his hit "Ramblin' Gamblin' Man." His career took off, and he became a singles-chart mainstay with the release of "Night Moves" in 1976. Over the years, Seger has sold over 75 million albums worldwide, earning him a Grammy and induction into both the Rock & Roll and Songwriters Hall of Fame.
Reflecting on his songwriting, Seger shared, "I've always tried to write something that had some germ of universality. You know, I've felt that way, I've been there, I've known that person, whatever. And that's what I strive to do. I think that's what every artist strives to do is strike a familiar chord with people." Growing up in Detroit, Seger soaked in soul music, which influenced his sound. "I grew up in a black neighborhood listening to black music when the guys were out washing their cars and stuff with their radios on. And I think that is the single unifying fact of all of it is very R&B inspired around here."
Seger's career has spanned decades, something he never imagined when he started out. "Back then I think everybody like myself, maybe Billy Joel and Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty and all of us, never imagined that we'd be around this long. I think the career arc was like five years when we first started out. And, we've been very fortunate." Having completed his final tour in 2019, Seger now enjoys life with his third wife, Juanita, and their two children, Samantha and Cole.
