The fate of ex-GRPD officer Christopher Schurr now in the hands of a jury

Tuesday 3:30pm Report:

Kent County Circuit Court Judge Christina Mims has sent the jury in the second-degree murder trial of Christopher Schurr back to deliberate after addressing them this afternoon. They had gone into recess after announcing they were deadlocked. A little after 3 p.m., she spoke to them in the courtroom, reading special instructions in the event of a deadlock.

Monday Report:

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- After six days of testimony, jury deliberations are underway in in the Christopher Schurr second-degree murder trial today in Kent County Circuit Court.

Judge Christina Mims has given final instructions to the jury. The former Grand Rapids Police officer shot fleeing motorist Patrick Lyoya in the head three years ago during a ground struggle along Nelson Avenue. The defense team says it was in self-defense because Schurr was concerned for his safety during a struggle over a Taser.
