There's Now A Flying Squirrel-Inspired Drone

Researchers at South Korea's Pohang University of Science and Technology and the Agency for Defense Development have developed a drone inspired by flying squirrels, featuring foldable silicone wings that enhance maneuverability. These wings deploy to increase aerodynamic drag, allowing the drone to execute rapid stops and sharp turns, capabilities that traditional quadcopters struggle with. The drone's control system employs a Thrust-Wing Coordination Control strategy, utilizing artificial neural networks to predict aerodynamic drag and coordinate wing deployment with motor thrust. This integration enables the drone to adapt its flight dynamics in real-time, maintaining stability and precision during complex maneuvers. Future developments aim to further mimic flying squirrel behaviors, such as gliding and wall landings, to expand the drone's versatility in various environments.
