Bryan Adams' iconic song "Summer of '69" might have you believing that he got his first real six-string at the five and dime in 1969. However, the real story is a bit different. During an appearance on Chris Difford's podcast, I Never Thought It Would Happen, Adams revealed that he actually got his first guitar from his uncle when he was around 12, which would have been in 1971. He shared how his uncle took him to a music shop in Reading to buy an electric guitar, an Italian imitation Stratocaster, which he still has today.
Adams didn't always have that guitar. He gave it to his neighbor when his family moved from Israel. Years later, he received an email from someone claiming to have the guitar. Adams tried to reach out, but the communication went silent. Then, a decade later, while in a club in Berlin, someone approached Bryan, claiming to have the guitar. The person who initially emailed him had tragically died in a plane crash.
Adams described the whole situation as "the stupidest story," but it's what happened. He managed to get the guitar back, although he noted that it seemed to have been modified in the neck. Despite trying to play it a few times, he hasn't bothered to set it up again. Now, it sits as a piece of history. Bryan Adams will resume touring with a show in Iceland on Monday.
