It’s been a while since we have felt as large an earthquake as we did Monday morning, Most people we have talked to are saying it’s the biggest quake they have ever felt in San Diego.
You have to go back more than a decade and a half, 15 years, to have felt an earthquake like the one this week. It was the Easter Sunday quake on April 4th in 2010.
It was centered south of the border in the town known for its name that includes part of the words Mexico and California, Mexicali. But as far south as it was, measuring 7.2 at its epicenter, it rocked San Diego County big time…with only minor damage here…but memories of an Easter Sunday that will not be forgotten for us who were here.
Before that you have to go all the way back another 30 year some years after that, to 1979, when San Diego felt a large earthquake.
That one was centered out in the Imperial Valley that damaged some buildings in El Centro and Brawley. While nearly 100 miles away, because it measured 6.5 at the epicenter, it was felt in San Diego County pretty good, windows rattled and things shook.
Having flown to El Centro that day to do reporting on the quake damage, and having just moved to San Diego a few months before, it was easy to suffer from a case of the earthquake jitters.
Everyone does at one time or another no matter how long you’ve lived in Southern California where quakes are part of life.
