10,000-Year-Old Dire Wolf Pup Brought Back to Life

Dallas-based biotech company Colossal Biosciences has pulled off a historic feat by bringing back the long-extinct dire wolf.

Meet Romulus, Remus, and Khaleesi—three puppies born in late 2024 and early 2025, thanks to groundbreaking DNA technology.

Romulus and Remus were born in October 2024, while Khaleesi arrived in January 2025. These pups are the first-ever dire wolves revived from ancient DNA, with their genetic material coming from fossils over 13,000 years old!

Colossal used gene editing to resurrect the species, and the pups are already making waves in both science and pop culture. CEO Ben Lamm called the achievement a huge milestone for de-extinction efforts, which could have significant impacts on conservation efforts in the future.

According to Colossal Biosciences, the dire wolves’ unique genetic traits, including white fur and thick coats, were perfectly suited for the cold Pleistocene climate.
