A tragic accident occurred on Sunday morning (March 30) on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Lehigh County, resulting in the death of one motorcyclist and injury to another. According to Pennsylvania State Police, a 24-year-old woman from Perth Amboy, New Jersey, was driving a 2019 Honda HRV southbound in the northbound lanes near the Lehigh Valley Tunnel. The wrong-way driver struck two motorcyclists from a group of six around 9:05 a.m.
The deceased, a 50-year-old man from Bristol, Bucks County, was pronounced dead at the scene. The other motorcyclist, a 24-year-old man also from Bristol, was treated on-site by Northern Valley Emergency Medical Services and later transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest for further treatment. The driver of the SUV sustained minor injuries.
The crash led to the closure of the northbound lanes of the Turnpike, with traffic being detoured onto the Lehigh Valley exit. The lanes were reopened by 1:20 p.m. WFMZ reported that the Lehigh County Coroner's office has scheduled an autopsy for Monday to determine the exact cause of death. The deceased man's identity is being withheld to allow his family time to grieve.
The incident is under investigation by the Pennsylvania State Police, Lehigh County Coroner's Office, and Lehigh County District Attorney's Office.
