Jan Sramek, a 38-year-old Czech entrepreneur, is leading an ambitious project to build a new city in Solano County, California. Known as California Forever, the city aims to be a sustainable, walkable community for 400,000 people. Sramek, who grew up in Czechoslovakia, is backed by tech billionaires like Marc Andreessen and Reid Hoffman.

Sramek's vision for California Forever includes constructing hospitals, schools, and recreational facilities on a 27-square-mile area between Sacramento and San Francisco. However, the project has faced challenges. In 2024, Sramek's plan to rezone agricultural land for development was pulled from the ballot due to public opposition and legal hurdles. Critics, including local farmers and environmentalists, viewed the project as a potential takeover by wealthy outsiders.

Despite setbacks, Sramek continues to work with county officials to address concerns and refine his plan. He aims to return to voters with a revised proposal by 2026. Sramek's determination to build a new city reflects his belief in California's potential to solve its housing crisis and create a model urban environment. As he navigates local politics and regulatory processes, Sramek remains committed to his vision of a modern utopia.
