The Sacramento Zoo welcomed the newest member of the zoo family on March 1 – a female Masai giraffe calf. KFBK's Jensen Rader took video of the calf's introduction to the public. (See below)
The zoo now invites the public to help select the calf’s name.
The Animal Care team gave careful thought and selected three possible names: Gumdrop, Sumi, or Monica. Each name holds meaningful significance to the zoo community and reflects the zoo’s commitment to animal care and international conservation.
Members of the public can visit saczoo.org/nameagiraffe to find out more about the history of each name, and cast a vote for their favorite name by making a donation toward the construction of a new shade structure for the giraffe herd.
Voting is open now through April 3, with the calf’s name announced on April 4. Proceeds will be used to construct a new shade structure and provide other habitat improvements.
