VenHub, a new concept in retail, has introduced fully automated convenience stores operated entirely by robots. These stores are open 24/7, offering a safe and secure shopping experience without the need for human employees. VenHub CEO Shahan Ohanessian described it as a groundbreaking development, stating, "It’s never been done in the history of the world."
Located on a busy street in North Hollywood, the store resembles a vending machine within a shipping container. Customers begin their shopping experience by downloading the VenHub app, which allows them to select products. The app will soon support guest logins and third-party logins like Google and Apple. Once items are chosen, robots retrieve them and place them in designated collection areas. The process is efficient, with dual robots using different tools to handle various items. Customers receive a notification when their order is ready and can collect their items by scanning a QR code.
VenHub's modular design allows for easy installation and customization, making it a cost-effective alternative to traditional stores. A VenHub location costs about $250,000 to set up, significantly less than the cost of employing staff for a traditional store. The company has over 800 pre-orders for its automated stores, with plans to expand to Southern California, Las Vegas, and the East Coast.
While some jobs may be eliminated, Ohanessian emphasized that new opportunities will arise. "Yes, there are certain jobs being eliminated, but there’s a whole bunch of other jobs that are being created," he said. VenHub aims to transform the retail landscape by providing an efficient and accessible shopping experience.
