The Southern District of Texas (SDTX) reported over 200 recent arrests of illegal immigrants in the United States.
U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei announced that 245 new cases have been filed in the past week by federal, state, and local law enforcement officials as part of Operation Take Back America. Some cases involve human smuggling and re-entry offenses. Many of the accused individuals also have serious felony convictions.
115 were charged with illegal re-entry including Santos Demetrio Marquez-Hernandez, a convicted sex offender from El Salvador. He faces up to 20 years in prison for re-entering the U.S. after being removed.
118 have been charged with illegal entry. This includes individuals from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Vietnam.
10 are human smuggling cases. Two men were arrested for attempting to smuggle 15 people through a Border Patrol checkpoint in Sarita.
The SDTX is one of the busiest districts in the country with 9 million people spread out across 44,000 square miles.
