Big yellowfin tuna being caught while kite fishing this week!
Pictured here is Andres Garcia and Tucker Ersek with a 138 pound yellowfin tuna caught earlier this week. We had several reports of fish of this similar size being caught after several hour battles. This particular fish was caught on 20 pound test monofilament line with live bait fished from a kite. We usually see these fish farther east in Bahama waters but with recent light gulfstream currents these fish may be straying outside normal migration patterns. We see a few of these trophy fish caught every year. One tip we can give regarding these odd catches is to bring a harpoon with you and leave it in the boat. These fish are tough to close the deal on close to the boat so throwing a harpoon will help you close the deal.
In other fishing locally the sailfish bite was consistent all week with most boats targeting sail's releasing an average of 3-4 fish per trip. Kingfish and blackfin tuna in the twenty pound range were abundant in depths from 100-120 feet of water.
We would see an increase this next few weeks in the blackfin tuna bite later in the afternoons. Fresh live bait such as pilchards and goggle eyes will be the go to baits for local anglers.
The swordfish bite was on fire this week. John Michael Lavergne out of Hillsboro inlet landed two fish aboard the "Relentless" with Bill Krueger weighing just over 100 pounds. They were back at the dock by noon. The bonito taco was the bait of choice. The sword bite should stay hot for a few weeks.
