It feels like we’re asked to leave a tip everywhere we go these days and people have had enough. What used to be a gesture of appreciation for a job well done has turned into a source of annoyance for a growing list of transactions and services.
Does the cashier at the frozen yogurt shop who literally does nothing except ring you up and take your money really deserve a 20% tip? The payment screen on the tablet she shows you think so. That’s why it’s not surprising that Americans are fed up with tipping. A new survey from WalletHub reveals how strongly people feel about tipping culture today.
- It finds that nearly 90% of Americans feel tipping is out of control.
- Almost three in five think businesses are using customer tips to replace employee salaries
- 83% believe automatic service charges should be banned
- More than a quarter of Americans think tips should be taxed (like they are right now)
- Nearly 30% admit they tip less when presented with a tip suggestion screen.
- Four in 10 respondents believe tipping should be replaced by an instant employee rating system so businesses can decide how much to pay their staff based on their performance.
- Over three-quarters (77%) think tips should only be split between employees who actually interact with customers.
- Around half of those polled reveal they often leave a tip because of social pressure rather than good service.
