Department of Education staff received a notice that all offices in Washington, D.C., and regional offices will be closed Wednesday for security reasons.
President Trump is expected to issue an executive order directing Education Secretary Linda McMahon to begin the process of dissolving the Department of Education, a move that has been a priority for Republicans for decades.
McMahon sent a letter to staff emphasizing the department's final mission to eliminate bureaucratic bloat quickly and responsibly, stating that the American people elected President Trump to make significant changes in Washington.
Dissolving the Department of Education would require congressional approval and faces a significant hurdle in the Senate, where 60 votes would be needed for the plan to advance.
