A 20-second hug from a spouse can have many benefits, including:

  • Reduced stress: Hugs can lower cortisol levels, the stress hormone.
  • Increased oxytocin: Hugs increase oxytocin levels, the love hormone.
  • Improved mood: Hugs can help you de-stress and promote a positive mindset.
  • Stronger emotional connection: Hugs can strengthen emotional connections with loved ones.
  • Lower blood pressure: Hugs can help ensure a healthy heart.
  • Improved relationships: Hugs can improve relationships and connection.

Some studies have shown that the length of a hug matters more than the number of hugs. A 20-second hug can be particularly beneficial when reuniting with your spouse after a long day.

How to apply it

  • Try to schedule a 20-second hug with your spouse each day.
  • Put down what you're doing and give your spouse a hug when you come home.
  • Even if you don't feel like hugging, try to show love and faithfulness to your spouse.

You can also try hugging a cushion while having a stressful conversation.
