This Week's Weird News 2/28/25

A new search for Malaysian Airlines flight 370, a human hand dropped on an Irish schoolyard by a bird, and a bizarre pet store robbery wherein one of the crooks faked a seizure to pull off the heist were among the weird and wondrous stories to cross our desk this past week.

The mystery of Malaysian Airlines flight 370 was back in the headlines this past week as a new search for the lost airliner was launched in the Indian Ocean. The first such endeavor in six years, the expedition will utilize autonomous underwater vehicles to scour four specific areas where it is suspected that the passenger jet may have come to rest. The company behind the search, Ocean Infinity, believes that insights gleaned from MH370 flight data in recent years may have provided the necessary clues to pinpoint the location of the lost plane. Should the endeavor be successful, it will give closure to the families of those who lost loved ones in the tragedy and put an end to a modern mystery that has proven to be particularly perplexing to experts and researchers for over a decade.

Strangely, this past week featured two odd stories involving, of all things, severed limbs. First, in Ireland, the discovery of a human hand on the grounds of a schoolyard sparked a police investigation where it was determined that the baffling body part had been dropped there by a bird. While it has yet to be definitively determined who the limb belonged to, investigators suspect that it likely came from an unfortunate youngster who was badly injured in a nearby explosion the previous day. Later in the week, a sinister miscreant in West Virginia drew condemnation after they sliced off the arm of a celebrated Sasquatch statue featured on the state's popular Paranormal Trail.

By far the most bizarre story of the week came by way of Colorado where some brazen bandits stole a pair of bulldog puppies from a pet store by faking a seizure to distract the staff. In the wild scene, which was captured by the shop's security system, one of the suspects approached the register and then fell to the floor in what appeared to be a medical emergency. As the man was being tended to by concerned employees, his accomplice snatched a pair of the store's bulldog puppies and made a run for it. While scrambling out of the store with the pilfered pooches, the crook was nearly tackled by two of the workers but managed to escape with the stolen dogs.
