Will Packer On Beyoncé's 5 NOs, Hollywood Lessons & The "Threat" Of AI

Film producer Will Packer has spent the last three decades shaping some of Hollywood’s biggest box office hits, but now he’s stepping into a new role: author.

Sitting down with Angie Martinez, Packer discusses his new book, Who Better Than You?, a collection of stories from his time in the entertainment industry and the philosophy that has guided him through success, setbacks, and everything in between.

From Film to the Page:

Inspired by Angie’s journey in writing her memoir, Packer decided it was time to share his own experiences in a book. Who Better Than You? isn’t just a Hollywood tell-all—it’s a blueprint for success, infused with lessons from his career working alongside some of the biggest names in entertainment. The book includes insights from stars like Issa Rae, Idris Elba, and Kevin Hart, who have all been part of his incredible journey.

The Magic of Will Packer:

Angie praises Packer’s ability to create the perfect project package, an instinct that has set him apart in the industry. For Packer, it all comes down to vision and execution—understanding how to cut through the noise and bring together the right people to make a project work. But beyond just putting together great films, he believes that true leadership is about recognizing value, not only in oneself but in others.

"Your brand starts from the moment you’re born," he explains, emphasizing that people often don’t put enough value on their own work. His goal is to help others realize how crucial their success is—not just for them, but for everyone around them.

Surrounding Yourself with the Right Energy:

Packer is intentional about the people he keeps in his circle. He believes in placing those around him who amplify his energy rather than drain it. Negative people will always be present, but the key is to weigh what they bring to the table and decide if their presence is worth the cost. His biggest mistakes? He sees them as necessary. “Everything I did wrong, I needed to do anyway.”

The Power of Persistence: When Beyoncé Said No—Five Times:

Even with a track record of box office hits, Packer still hears "no" in Hollywood. He recalls how Beyoncé turned him down five times before finally agreeing to be involved in the film 'Obsessed'. “That sixth time, she said yes.” It’s a lesson in perseverance—sometimes, the timing isn’t right, but that doesn’t mean the opportunity is lost.

AI and the Future of Entertainment:

As conversations around AI in media continue, Packer acknowledges its power but insists it can never replace the human element. While AI is reshaping the industry, he stresses the importance of focusing on what you can control rather than worrying about what’s beyond your influence.

He also reminds people that Hollywood isn’t always what it seems. “A lot of your favorite actors aren’t working.” Success in the industry is far from guaranteed, and the ability to adapt is key.

Building Careers Without Taking Credit:

One of the things Packer is most proud of isn’t just his own success but the opportunities he has created for others. He has played a major role in launching the careers of Idris Elba, Kevin Hart, Chris Brown, and Tiffany Haddish, yet he never claims to have “made” them. Instead, he takes pride in placing people in the right roles and watching them shine.

This instinct was especially evident when Tiffany Haddish landed her breakout role in Girls Trip—a perfect match that helped catapult her career.

A Legacy in the Making

Now, as he reflects on his 30-year career, Packer considers what drives him. It’s not just about the films he’s produced or the billion-dollar box office numbers—it’s about the lasting impact he leaves behind.

And in a full-circle moment, he arrived for the interview with his mother, wife, and daughter by his side—on his birthday, no less. A reminder that, beyond Hollywood, his greatest success is the life he’s built with the people who matter most.

Will Packer’s journey is far from over, but with Who Better Than You? now in stores, he’s offering readers the chance to learn from his experiences, find their own power, and carve out their own legacy.
