There's another arctic blast heading to Houston, minus the snow! And Mayor John Whitmire doesn't believe it will be as bad as the one that hit last month.
"We do not believe it will be a severe freezing episode" Whitmire said, "Maybe the chill factor as low as 21, but maybe freezing temperatures of around 31 degrees. But I'm not about to try to predict the weather conditions."
The National Weather Service (NWS) can and does, and they are calling for an extreme cold watch for overnight Wednesday into Thursday.
"Look after your family, your pets, and your plants" Whitmire pleaded, "All I'm doing is asking to Houstonians to listen to the authorities".
That includes HFD Chief Thomas Munoz, who reminded everyone to be careful with generators and electric heaters.
The city will also open up 12 warming centers on Wednesday night at 8pm:
- Acres Homes Multi-Service Center: 6719 W. Montgomery Road
- Denver Harbor Multi-Service Center: 6402 Market Street
- Fifth Ward Multi-Service Center: 4014 Market Street
- Fonde Community Center: 110 Sabine Street
- Kashmere Multi-Service Center: 4802 Lockwood Drive
- Magnolia Multi-Service Center: 7037 Capitol Street
- Metropolitan Multi-Service Center: 1475 W. Gray Street
- Moody Community Center: 3725 Fulton Street
- Northeast Multi-Service Center: 9720 Spaulding Street
- Southwest Multi-Service Center: 6400 High Star Drive
- Sunnyside Multi-Service Center: 4410 Reed Road
- Third Ward Multi-Service Center: 3611 Ennis Street
The centers will be open at least until Thursday morning, until the city decides what the plan is.
"It's my goal that this will be the last news conference we have this winter dealing with the weather" Whitmire said in closing, "We'll have all hands on deck, we'll have people 24/7 until we get through this arctic blast."
