The 2026 primaries are just a little over a year away, and one of the hottest races here in Texas is going to be Senator John Cornyn's bid for re-election. He's fallen out of favor with the GOP base in Texas and is headed for an uphill battle.

Fort Bend County GOP Chair Bobby Eberle says Cornyn has faced tough elections before, but something's changed this time. He said, "The grassroots just do not like the senator that he's become. I do think this one will be different; quality people will step up to challenge him."

So who are those "quality people?" According to Eberle, the most likely option is Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. He said, "He is likely to do it. He's put out those feelers, he's seen the polling, and he knows the state's mood is very much against Cornyn."

If he runs, Paxton is likely going into the race with a significant advantage over Cornyn because while Cornyn has built up a less than popular voting record during his 23 years in the Senate, Paxton is coming off four years of making a strong name for himself while fighting back against the Biden Administration.

Eberle said that, "He is a national hero among grassroots conservatives because he continually fought for our values, taking on the Biden Administration."
