Jefferson Parish is kicking off a celebration of its bicentennial.
The Louisiana Legislature created the parish 200 years ago Tuesday.
Parish leaders gathered in Gretna to start the celebration.
Jefferson Parish President Cynthia Lee Sheng said the parish has become the second largest in Louisiana since it was founded in 1825.
At Tuesday's event, leaders unveiled a new statue of a pelican to mark the occasion.
