On This Day In 1964 The Beatles Played First American Concert

It was on this day in 1964, just two days after their appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, when the Beatles made their U.S. concert debut in Washington, D.C. Earlier that day, they had arrived from New York by train at Union Station in the middle of a snowstorm. The show took place at the Washington Coliseum, where the seating plan was configured for boxing, so the Fabs set up in the middle, and in between songs, they moved the amplifiers, microphones, and Ringo Starr's drum riser one-quarter turn clockwise, so all 8,092 fans in attendance could get equal time with a front-facing view.

In honor of the anniversary, watch footage from that landmark night, above and below.
