Trump Warns Texas House: Pass School Choice

President Donald Trump praised Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick and state Senator Brandon Creighton for making quick work of a school choice bill that passed the state senate last week, but now he says he's watching closely for the state House of Representatives to pass the bill too.

The remarks by the President on the social media platform Truth Social were taken by most as a warning that he wants to see a law allowing the use of taxpayer dollars to fund children's education at an accredited private school, in addition to continuing to fund public education.

Sen. Creighton's Senate Bill 2 was approved by the senate that sets aside about $1 billion to private schools for 100,000 students in association with Senate Bill 1, the state budget bill which, when passed, will effectively change the way Texas funds its schooling.

President Trump has said he supports the school choice plan, which is also backed by Gov. Greg Abbott and most sate Republicans.

The state House is expected to take up a companion bill soon, but the legislative body moves slowly in this early portion of the legislative session as it settles in and makes rules after appointing chairmanships and setting up hearings.
