A suspect is in custody in connection to a reported sexual assault of a student in a University of Houston parking garage.
On Saturday, the University of Houston Police Department said the suspect was arrested near the scene of the incident Friday night. Their identity is not being released at this time.
According to a security alert sent out by the school, the alleged sexual assault happened just before 6 p.m. Friday on the second floor of the Welcome Center Student Parking Garage. UHPD said a man approached the victim and brandished a knife before forcing his way into the victim's vehicle.
It's the third time a security alert has been issued this week and the second reported incident to happen in that parking garage since Wednesday. An alert was sent out by the university Wednesday, detailing that a student was robbed in the parking garage.
A UH spokesperson issued this statement Friday night:
"The University of Houston is deeply concerned about the recent crimes that have taken place on our campus this week. These despicable acts, including the assaults and robbery of two individuals and an aggravated sexual assault, are horrific and we are actively investigating. Our thoughts are with the victims, and we remain committed to ensuring the safety, support and the well-being of our entire UH community."
The UH Police Department is working with the Houston Police Department, METRO Police and other law enforcement agencies in the investigation.
UH also said security will be ramped up in the parking garage with more officers patrolling the area nonstop.
