President Donald Trump announced on Friday (February 7) that he is revoking former President Joe Biden's security clearances and stopping his daily intelligence briefings. This decision mirrors Biden's 2021 action when he revoked Trump's access to intelligence briefings, citing Trump's "erratic behavior" following the January 6 Capitol attack.
Trump's announcement was made via his Truth Social platform, where he claimed Biden set a precedent by removing his clearances four years ago. Trump criticized Biden's cognitive abilities, referencing a report by special counsel Robert Hur, which described Biden as having a "poor memory." The report investigated Biden's alleged mishandling of classified materials after his vice presidency, but no charges were filed.
" I will always protect our National Security — JOE, YOU’RE FIRED," Trump wrote on Truth Social.
The practical impact of Trump's decision is uncertain, as former presidents typically do not retain security clearances after leaving office. However, they may receive intelligence briefings as a courtesy or when a sitting president seeks their guidance. Trump argued that Biden's actions in 2021 justify his decision to revoke Biden's access now.
Trump's move follows similar actions against other critics, including retired Joint Chiefs Chairman General Mark Milley and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
