The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office will no longer respond to mental health calls where no crime is committed, Sheriff Jim Cooper announced Tuesday. Citing a 2024 Ninth Circuit Court ruling, Cooper said law enforcement is not equipped to handle mental health crises. Instead, such calls will be routed to the county-run 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. The county says it is working with law enforcement and WellSpace Health to ensure continued crisis support.
