ENCINO (CNS) - A man is in police custody Thursday on suspicion of fatally shooting his wife in Encino.

Officers responded to the 5100 block of Hesperia Avenue, two blocks south of Ventura Boulevard, to reports of shots fired around 7:22 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The 54-year-old woman's husband allegedly shot the victim several times and attempted to run away, but was caught and arrested by officers, NBC4 reported. Neighbors reported hearing at least five gunshots before police were contacted, according to NBC4.

According to police, the couple did not live in the neighborhood.

"It appears to be an isolated incident of domestic violence," LAPD Lt. Guy Golan told reporters.

ABC 7 reported the victim was found with a gunshot wound to the head in the middle of the street.

Police said the woman was pronounced dead at the scene, and the motive leading to the fatal shooting remained under investigation Wednesday evening.
