The U.S. Military Academy at West Point has disbanded dozens of campus clubs related to gender and race amid the Trump administration's efforts to dismantle DEI.
According to a memo sent on Tuesday (February 4), dozens of clubs aimed to connect students of different ethnic backgrounds, promote women's leadership in the Army, promote diversity in professional development, and provide support for the campus' LGBTQ+ community were ordered to cease operations, per ABC News.
The National Society of Black Engineers, the Society of Women Engineers Club, the Latin Cultural Club, and the Native American Heritage Forum were among the clubs affected by the order.
The memo stated that the changes were made "in accordance with recent Presidential Executive Orders, Department of Defense guidance, and the Department of the Army guidance."
President Donald Trump signed an executive order last month titled "Restoring America's Fighting Force," which directed the federal agencies to abolish every DEI office, including "sub-offices, programs, elements, or initiatives established to promote a race-based preferences system that subverts meritocracy, perpetuates unconstitutional discrimination, and promotes divisive concepts or gender ideology.”
Tuesday's memo at West Point "cancels all sections, meetings, events, and other activities associated with these clubs." The websites for the various clubs are also no longer available online. Other clubs at the school are still reportedly being investigated.
