IRVING, Texas - The Fresno State equestrian team had three riders earn January Big 12 Rider of the Month honors, announced by the conference office on Thursday. The Bulldogs swept the jumping seat recognitions with Olivia Ferro earning the fences nod and Yasmin Roman earning the honor in the flat. Alana Becker was named the reining rider of the month.
The honors are the first of the season for the Bulldogs who are 6-3 on the year, entering another conference matchup this weekend. All three Bulldogs earned a Big 12 Rider of the Month recognition for the first time in their career.
Ferro was 2-0 in the Bulldogs' January meets, earning the fences MOP in both of her rides on the month. She did not score less than an 80 in her two rides, and had a 34-point victory over her Minnesota Crookston opponent. Her two MOPs are her firsts of the season.
Roman also opened up the spring season with a 2-0 record, defeating her Delaware State and Minnesota Crookston opponents in the flat. She earned MOP honors against Minnesota Crookston, scoring an 80 for her highest home score of the season. It was her second MOP in the flat this year.
Both their wins over Minnesota Crookston was a part of the Bulldogs' perfect 10-0 sweep in the jumping seat events in that meet.
In the reining, Becker went 2-0 in January, defeating her Delaware State and Minnesota Crookston opponents. She earned MOP honors against Minnesota Crookston with a 72-70 win. Her 72 against the Eagles was her highest score of the season.
Becker and Ferro were honored earlier this week as the National Collegiate Equestrian Association January Riders of the Month.
The trio of riders of the month are back in action tomorrow against No. 10 Baylor. Action at the Student Horse Center will begin at 10 a.m PT.
