Between temperature, light, bedding and background noise, there are a lot of variables involved in creating your ideal sleep environment. While some nights you may feel tired enough to crash on top of your bed without considering any of those details, figuring out what works best for you to get the best sleep is essential. And it turns out, for a lot of us, some kind of sound is a part of that.
A new survey of 1-thousand U.S. adults finds that 38% say they can’t sleep in silence. When they hit the sack, they count on white noise or other sounds to help them drift off to dreamland.
- But Gen Z has the hardest time snoozing in a completely quiet room, with 49% of them relying on sounds to get to sleep.
- Millennials (41%) and Gen X (40%) are almost tied when it comes to white noise use, while baby boomers (32%) are the least likely to need sound to send them to sleep.
“White noise can be a powerful sleep aid, especially for Gen Z, who are often immersed in a digital environment where silence is scarce,” explains Chelsea Perry, a diplomat of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine. “Their minds may be more conditioned to need a form of soft noise as a signal to unwind. Using white noise might offer a calming transition, helping counteract the overstimulation from phones and other devices.”
