A Detroit mom is facing charges after she allegedly smothered her nine-year-old son to death, buried his body in a backyard grave, and left town.

According to PEOPLE, Brandee Katrice Pierce, 41, is facing charges of first-degree murder, felony murder, first-degree child abuse, evidence tampering, and concealing the death of an individual in connection to the death of her son, Zemar King III, whom authorities believe was killed in October 2024.

King's remains were found in a shallow grave behind a home in Woodingham Drive on January 6. The boy's cause of death was identified as "smothering and neck compression."

Authorities said Pierce bound her son's hands and feet together and put his body in a backyard grave she dug after choking him to death. Pierce had left her Detroit rental home with her other three-year-old son by November 6 and fled to Cobb County, Georgia.

Authorities said Pierce came to the attention of the Brookhaven Police Department in Georgia on December 30 on unrelated allegations.

"I have been a prosecutor for a long time, and I often say that I have seen it all. The horrors of this child abuse case defy that," Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said in a statement. "The alleged actions of this defendant are among the most callous I have seen and hope never to see again."

Pierce could face life in prison without the possibility of parole if convicted.
