Holyoke officials are explaining why a commercial building downtown was condemned earlier this week.
Building Commissioner Leslie Ward said people were living in 56 Suffolk Street with makeshift sanitary equipment and cooking equipment along with air mattresses.
Ward added that the building had been without heat and the sprinkler system was taken down as well.
A temporary assistance center has been opened for those displaced.
